Southgate Road

Memories of Pauline Stacey

I was first married (divorced since) in 1956.  my fiance , as he was then, and I bought our first house

170 Southgate Road   we paid £1900 for it. and yes, access to rear of garden where we had a garage by the drive way.

our house was opposite a part of the school playground as I recall.. green field.

at the rear was the Catholic school/church. ?? St. Mary`s… don`t really recall..the name.

so I guess we would have been down the bottom of the road… looking at the maps are refreshing my memory of the roads, and names of the roads.   You can alter this comment slightly. perhaps leave out my marital stuff! lol

It was a semi detached house, 3 beds, with the third bedroom the usual boxroom type.

small kitchen and two reception rooms,  I expect it to have been altered in that way.

Pauline Stacey, (nee Latimer) not sure if you know that.

  1. ..Hi Pauline, do you remember Tony And Marg at 166, i remember mr amd mrs Salt at 170

  2. I had a school friend who lived at No. 9 Southgate Road – Elaine Ingram. We attended Kingsland Road and Kings Rise Schools in the 1950s. Southgate Road was rather a “posh” road in those days, owner/occupied properties as compared to the council houses that dominated the Kingstanding area. We used to walk to Southgate Road through a “gulley” between the houses in Kings Road that lead to Dunedin Road. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of Elaine I would be pleased to hear from them.

    • Hi Gwen,i spent most of my childhood in the 50s playing in that gully. We lived 3 doors down kings rd (503). Some of the time was spent fighting the kids in Dunedin Rd. Happy, happy days. I must have been at KingslandRd school and then Gt Barr at the same time as you.
